I think we can safely say that social media is changing the way that we view digital marketing. With the use of social media increasing year on year since its introduction in 2004, it has become one of the leading sources of news, entertainment and interaction for a lot of the world.

Social Media is used daily by over 3.5 billion people worldwide and is yet to reach peak popularity! To put that into perspective, that is close to 45% of the world’s population scrolling through a social feed daily. Does this make you think about your social presence? Are you using the right channel? Is your content reaching your target audience? Are you posting often enough? What are your competitors doing?

Know your Target Audience.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to know your target market inside and out. It is best to be as specific as possible so that you can tailor your posts to ensure maximum engagement. You may have multiple audiences depending on your product or service offering – that’s okay!

A good way to get to know your audience is by writing down the answers to a few questions:

Am I using the right Social Media Channel?

Now that you know your audience, you can determine which platform to use. Not all social platforms are set up the same so it is important that you know which channels your target market uses most frequently – don’t spread yourself too thin by trying to create a presence across every platform.

It is important to know the benefits of each platform and how they would apply to your business. Do you have a lot of really great, high quality imagery that you can continue to create/supply frequently? Instagram would be great for your business! Or maybe you have a loyal customer base that would give you glowing reviews? Facebook is one of the first places that people will look for peer reviews! Is your product or service B2B? LinkedIn is seen as one of the more professional ways to approach other businesses.

Knowing the current social platform demographics will give you an upper hand when deciding which social accounts you want to create and focus on.

How much is too much?

Now that you’ve defined your audience and decided which channel/s will benefit you most, you need to create a plan for posting! A question that we often get asked is “how many times a week should I be posting on my social channels?” and honestly, there is no magic answer that fits all. That is down to the fact that what works for one brand, might not work for another.

There are several factors you need to take into consideration when planning your posting schedule:

A few general rules I like to follow are quality>quantity and consistency>frequency. It’s also important that you have a clear goal of what your social media presence is trying to achieve otherwise you won’t know whether your posts are successful or not.
